Once spent, they are lost forever. Successful people are ruthless about their time and how they spend it. Are you spending your evenings after work doing something that moves you towards your goals, or wasting it on social media. Do you spend weekends building something, or learning something new or hanging at the bar with your friends?Stop waiting for something to fall into your lapWeve all heard stories about people who were in the right place at the right time and success fell into their lap. Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert Blair

Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert Blair Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert Blair Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert BlairArticle Edited by Julia Yeung, ASME Public Affairs and Outreach Intern Interview by Soren MaloneyNiebert Blair works as a Contract Manager for Guyana Power and Light Inc., one of the Demerara Power Plants located on the banks of the Demerara River in Georgetown, Guyana in South America. She is a Chartered Engineer with a Bachelors degree from the University of Guyana and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.Born in Georgetown, Guyana, Niebert grew up in Hopetown, Berbice, a small close-knit village with a small population of about 2,000 people, most of which are herbei relatives. As a child growing up, she found herself constantly opening and repairing items. She opened her grandmothers radio, unscrewed door locks, and even attempted repairing her own bicycle after observing her cous ins fixing theirs. These experiences fueled her passion for figuring out how things work.I dont think I chose engineering, engineering chose me. I welches the best graduating student in the region. My dad wanted me to become a lawyer and I wanted to become a doctor because I wanted to help people, but my mother wanted me to become an engineer.Nieberts mother is a teacher and witnessed her exposure to many technical subjects at school and suggested engineering as a possible career path. In addition, her fathers work as a welder at GuySuCo (Guyana Sugar Corporation) exposed her to the inner workings of a sugar factory. This encouraged her to take the GuySuCo technical training school exam. Although she was the highest scorer, she opted to go to a 2-year technical institute instead. Now as a power engineer Niebert who originally trained for mechanical engineering, acquired the skills to perform work on the electrical engineering side by working with men in the shops from the planning to implementation stage.Being involved and getting to the bottom of details, I was hands-on, even to hand a spanner. I was always at the forefront of getting the work done and my hands dirty. I would climb onto transformers to inspect for problems. Her transition into the energy development field came from her desire to pursue a new challenge. There is a shortage of power engineers in the energy sector worldwide with few engineers in the industry and almost no women. As power engineering is a key area in energy development, she was interested in and decided to apply for a job in Belize that would help her develop the skills to become a mora rounded engineer in the energy field. She worked in Belize for almost two years.Niebert also faces obstacles when it comes to working in a developing country. The lack of resources, financial constraints, and the limited amount of information available poses challenges when working to develop new systems. In a developing world, its all about dollars a nd sense, so as engineers we need to make these two combinations work well. I would be happy to know I designed a system without state of the art technology that is 80-95% efficient, that works and gives me a high return on investment. She also finds that she is not scrutinized being a woman in the industry as she has become use to working with men and has even encountered men who have tried to help and support her career advancement. She applies the principles - honesty, trust, and discipline - when it comes to working with anyone.Niebert offers this advice for young women considering a career in engineeringI would encourage everyone to do something they like doing first of all. If a young lady loves engineering, then just go for it- Let beyond the skies be your limit. Mankind has discovered a lot throughout the ages and there is a lot mora for us to discover. Engineering is a great career. You have the opportunity to develop and improve systems and most of all make living more comf ortable, affordable and rewarding. One of the projects Niebert is working on in Guyana is the Frequency Conversion of the Electrical System. It involves converting the system from 50Hz to 60Hz, which will create huge savings, reduce transmission losses, and establish a single operating frequency in the country. Her advice for engineers working in developing environments is to take the we need to make dollars and sense engineering as a science and art.Engineers must have some general knowledge of what each area involves and its contribution to the overall outcome of the bigger picture. We must think how one thing affects another. As engineers we need to understand the financial and human aspect, how what we do affects the other people we work with.

Better Bosses Is the Number One Perk People Want - The Muse

Better Bosses Is the Number One Perk People Want - The Muse Better Bosses Is the Number One Perk People Want There’s always something that drags our day down- a cranky co-worker, a noisy office, a boatload of demanding emails, rain, snow, getting attacked by a pigeon, I could go on forever. So, we wanted to know: What’s one thing that would make every day better? In fact, we asked our fellow Musers (a.k.a., you!) to pick one thing that would make their work day a heck of a lot more enjoyable- a better boss, fewer emails, a private office, or free snacks. And the results, polled from 234 users on Twitter, were fascinating: We're curious: What would make your workday a whole lot better? #career #poll- The Muse (@dailymuse) October 4, 2016 According to this, most people would choose to have a better boss over any other benefit we offered up- proving to employers that it’s not all about the perks. In addition to this being interesting (and making me question how much I love free food), it also made us realize that the struggle is real when it comes to enjoying work when your manager is just meh. So, we wanted to go ahead and help you out if you find yourself in the same boat as our Twitter poll-ees. First, figure out the disconnect. Is it a communication issue? A personality difference? An unfair system? Identifying this will make the next step easier. The next step being that you need to get honest with your boss (in a professional manner). Yes, you have the authority, as well as the responsibility to start a conversation with your supervisor and come up with a better system for yourself- and for him. Remember that this person is human, and chances are he didn’t hire you just to make your life a living hell. Most managers want to help their employees be happy and succeed, because it means they’ll be happy and successful, too. So, make an effort to develop a relationship filled with open communication- try scheduling weekly or monthly meetings to update each other on what’s working (and what’s not), then ask for regular feedback in these meetings so you can nip any bad habits in the bud or find out if there’s any miscommunication happening. Maybe your boss sends you confusing email responses because you’re not asking your questions clearly. Or maybe she’s not assigning you big projects because you regularly complain about how much is currently on your plate. If regular meetings just aren’t feasible, make sure to use your next performance review to voice concerns you might have- big and small. Get clear on your upcoming goals and get as much as possible in writing so it’s easy to follow up. Lastly, you can even try managing up to make both your lives easier without her even knowing. Having a not-so-great boss stinks, but it’s also very common (as shown by this poll). Rather than wishing on a lucky star that you’ll be handed a perfect one, there are ways to improve your situation now. And if none of the above strategies work, we know of about 10,000+ job openings. (Just make sure to ask yourself these questions before you start interviewing to ensure you’ll be a fit from the start.) And good news for the people who chose the other perks, we didn’t forget about you- look here if you want to receive less emails, here to create your own private office even in an open workspace, and here to make your own delicious office snacks. Are none of these the thing that would turn your day around? Tweet us your answer! Photo of boss in meeting courtesy of Klaus Vedfelt/Getty Images.

Nominations Sought for ASME Edison Patent Award

Nominations Sought for ASME Edison Patent Award Nominations Sought for ASME Edison Patent Award Nominations Sought for the ASME Edison Patent Award The ASME Center for Research and Technology is currently seeking nominations for the ASME Thomas A. Edison Patent Award, the prestigious Society award that recognizes the work of a distinguished inventor. Established in 1997, the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award honors eminent creative achievement in the form of a patented invention, which is broadly recognized as significantly enhancing some aspect of the practice of mechanical engineering or having a significant impact on at least one industrial or commercial sector. These impacts may include creating a new business or industry; substantially improving the efficiency or productivity of an existing machine or process; dramatically reducing the size, weight or resource (e.g., energy or water) requirements in an existing machine or device; improving the quality of life; or financially impacting an existing business or industry. The nomination should focus on a single patent rather than the inventor's entire body of work. Previous recipients include Moshe Shoham for the invention of a miniature surgical robot that is affixed to the patient's bone, thereby enabling accurate treatment, and for founding Mazor Robotics to manufacture the robot; Vipin Kumar for his work with polymeric foams, which led to the creation of a new business with a wide range of applications; Jyotirmoy Mazumber for the development of the first closed loop Direct Metal Deposition technology, where functional engineering components can be made in near net shape directly from computer-aided design; and Alex J. Severinsky for the invention of the hyper-drive system, using high voltage power electronics and a turbo charged internal combustion engine, to create a commercially viable hybrid car. The award, which is presented at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, consists of a certificate, a bronze plaque, a $1,000 honorarium and a travel supplement to attend the Congress. The deadline submitting nomination materials for the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award is Feb. 10. For more information, please visit the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award page on ASME.org. Questions may be addressed to Norma Johnston, ASME Center for Research and Technology, at johnstonn@asme.org, or to the Edison Patent Award Committee chair, Richard Jacobsen, at jacorich@isu.edu.

Is Your Career Site Ready for Mobile Recruiting Heres Why It Should Be

Is Your Career Site Ready for Mobile Recruiting Here’s Why It Should Be Is Your Career Site Ready for Mobile Recruiting Here’s Why It Should Be I’m sure you’ve heard by now that if your website isn’t mobile friendly by today, April 21, 2015, Google will remove your site from its Mobile Search Results. Anywhere from 30 percent to 45 percent of Google’s traffic comes from a mobile device, which is why it’s so important to Google that it is delivering links to websites that are easily viewable from the mobile device. Run a test on Google’s Developer page to see if your site is mobile friendly here. Or you can search for your site from a mobile device. If “Mobile-friendly” pops up under your URL, you are already in good shape in Google’s eyes. As you can see, Simply Hired is optimized for the mobile job seeker. While being verified by Google is important, what’s more important is being optimized for a good mobile job seeker experience. Here at Simply Hired over 40 percent of our job seeker traffic originates from a mobile device, and that percentage is increasing. Yet, less than 20 percent of Fortune 500 companies allow for a mobile job seeker to apply for a job online, according to the iMomentous Corporate Mobile Readiness Report. Jibe reports that 80 percent of job seekers expect to be able to search for jobs easily from a smart phone. They also found that 20 percent of job seekers would not apply to a job if they could not do so from their phone. What does this all mean for you? As a sales guy, the most common pain point I hear from customers and prospects is that they would like to reduce their cost per hire across all sources. Well, guess what? Addressing the mobile job seeker is a great way to reduce your costs. Let’s do some quick math. Let’s say your average job gets 1,000 clicks across all sources. If all sources have a similar desktop to mobile traffic ratio then 600 of those clicks come from desktop and 400 of those clicks come from a mobile device. If you don’t have a process that allows a mobile job seeker to apply to that job, you just wasted 400 clicks. In other words, 400 job seekers found the open position you are trying to fill and could not apply to the job if they wanted to. Maybe the job seeker goes back to the job from an alternative device, but more often then not, the job seeker moves on. For those companies that sponsor with Simply Hired, we like to ensure that when a job seeker clicks on an open position they can actually apply to it. If you don’t have a good mobile application process in place, your jobs are only being sponsored on desktop. If you’re interested in hearing more about how Simply Hired can help with your mobile recruitment strategy. Contact us today!

For example, Nerium International (anti-aging products) is one of several prominent multi-level marketing companies using the term Brand Partner. While not as ubiquitous as other jobs on this list, there are also Brand Partner positions in more traditional corporate structures. The keywords below correspond to these types of positions. Marketing Brand Content Advertising Partnerships Direct Sales Partner Marketing Video Retail PMP Presentation Partnership Customer Service Strategy Adobe Positioning DSP Social Media Acquisitions KPIs Top Resume Keywords for Full-Stack Developer Whats the difference between a full-stack engineer (above) and a full-stack developer? In some contexts they are synonymous, in others the difference is murky at best. However, according to a HackerNoon article, the difference comes down to the respective employees knowledge base and approach. An engineer has a deeper educational foundation and approaches problems scientifically or academically, whereas a developer is more likely to employ a more creative approach and learn what they need to know as they need to know it.  The resume keywords back this up to a degree. That assessment will not be consistent across different organizations, but the average salary suggests that the engineer is indeed more well-rounded and senior to the developer. Full-stack developers make an average of $76,000 per year  according to PayScale, $12,000 less than engineers. Best Online Jobs for College Students

Best Online Jobs for College Students Best Online Jobs for College Students Some of the best jobs for college students are ones you can do from anywhere. Whether it’s a  part-time job  with a flexible schedule or a series of freelance gigs, there are online paid positions where you can work from your dorm room or wherever you happen to be. Some employers recruit college students specifically for remote jobs. For example, Apple’s website- which provides information on  jobs and internships for students- notes, “We’ll train you to troubleshoot, give you an iMac, and let you work from where you live. We’ll also work with you to accommodate your class schedule.”   There are also easy work-from-home computer jobs  you can do, that will boost your earnings while leaving you time to spend on your studies. Remote Jobs vs. Gigs When you’re researching opportunities, you’ll find different types of positions available. The job responsibilities may seem similar, but how you’re paid may be different. If you’re hired for a traditional job, regardless of whether you work at home or onsite, you’re considered an employee. Your employer will contribute to  payroll taxes  paid on your behalf. If you’re an employee, you’ll typically be paid an hourly rate for part-time work. If you’re considered a contractor (as you will be for freelance work and gig jobs), you are self-employed and responsible for tax payments. Contractors may be paid hourly or at a flat rate per project. Make sure you know the  differences between employees and independent contractors, so you’re aware of the important distinctions and how they impact your earnings. What You Need to Get Hired When you want to work online, you’ll need access to high-speed internet, a dependable computer, and, for some positions, a quiet place to work. For jobs that include telephone work, you may need a noise-canceling headset and dial pad. If the person who hires you is setting the schedule, you’ll need the flexibility to commit to those hours. For  freelance gigs, you’ll set your schedule, but must be able to meet client deadlines. For some gigs, all youll need is your time and a smartphone. Types of Online Positions for Students Many jobs that used to be done in an office setting can now be done from anywhere because technology makes it easy to work online with remote managers and co-workers. Workers who  telecommute  work from home, libraries, coffee shops, co-working spaces, and parks. There should be plenty of places on campus to use, and you can also utilize  Workfrom  to find local co-working spaces, job information, and community members who are working near you. Best Remote Jobs for College Students Remote Customer Support Representative Customer support agents  handle customer inquiries by phone, email, or chat. If youve got strong interpersonal skills and a knack for dealing with customers, this can be a good way to earn extra money. Many of these jobs can be done remotely, and most have a flexible schedule. Here are five  customer service jobs  you can do from home.Google for Jobs has listings for student customer support jobs. Virtual Assistant Virtual assistants  provide remote administrative services. Think of the role as being an  administrative assistant  who is not in the office. Responsibilities could include handling phone calls and email, creating spreadsheets and documents, writing and editing, invoicing, and paying bills. What you will be doing depends on who you’re working for and the services they need, but you will need top-notch  communication skills, attention to detail, and the  ability to multitask. Review advice on  how to become a virtual assistant. Virtual Data Entry  Clerk Data entry is another job that can easily be done remotely. Data entry clerks need strong typing and written communication skills. Online data entry is a job that’s known for online scams, so it’s important to be careful when reviewing options. Before you sign up for a data entry job, take the time to make sure that the  company is legitimate. Heres what you need to know to  get started doing online data entry work. Project Manager Part-time project managers  keep all the components of a project, including implementation and execution, on track for completion by or ahead of deadline. How to Tell If Youre Burnt Out at Work - The Muse

How to Tell If Youre Burnt Out at Work - The Muse How to Tell If Youre Burnt Out at Work I’d been sitting at my desk staring slack-jawed at that menacing blinking text cursor for the past 15 minutes. I was trying to muster up the motivation to actually get some real, productive work done- and, my attempts had so far been unsuccessful. “I just can’t seem to focus,” I lamented to my husband, who was seated at his own desk across the room likely wondering if I was trying to type my next article by sheer mind power alone. “Well, maybe you just need a break,” he responded, always one to be supportive and give me the benefit of the doubt, “You’ve been working really hard. You’re probably just burnt out.” Burnt out. I cringed at just the mention of the phrase. Those two little words are scary, aren’t they? They immediately inspire mental images of a flame quite literally being extinguished- like you weren’t quite productive, successful, or tough enough to accomplish the work that was required of you. You simply just ran out of steam. Me? Well, unfortunately, I’m never one to admit defeat- even when I desperately need to. I just continue to pile things on my plate like I’m at an all-you-can-eat buffet and figure I’ll worry about how I’ll make the necessary space for it all later. I’ve probably been burnt out more times than I can count. But, rather than ever owning that, waving the white flag, and giving in to the fact that I need to press pause, I often pass it off as something else entirely- just like I did with my response to my husband that evening. “No, I’m not burnt out,” I told him, while rolling my eyes for dramatic effect, “It’s just been a pretty chaotic week.” What Does It Mean to Be Burnt Out? There’s no denying that having an off week and being quite literally burnt out have some definite similarities. Both will inspire an exhausted, unmotivated, unfocused, negative, and just general “blegh” feeling- to use a super technical term. However, you don’t want to rest on the assumption that these two emotions are the exact same thing. You can typically bounce back from the emotional funk a few bad days inspire relatively quickly. But, recovering from burnout? That often requires measures a little more drastic than a pint of ice cream, a bottle of wine, and a good old-fashioned vent session. So, when the two are so closely related, how can you tell which one you’re going through? Are you actually burnt out, or just having a few unfortunate days? Ask yourself the following three questions to gain some clarity, and then determine how to move forward from there. But, in any case, the ice cream and wine can’t really hurt, can they? 1. How Long Have You Felt This Way? Everybody has a few bad days at work here and there- that’s completely normal. But, burnout is more persistent than that. While the warning signs can be remarkably similar, a true burnout will nag at you much longer than a rough day in the office will. Think about the last time you had a less-than-awesome week. Sure, maybe you screwed up during your presentation or had a disagreement with a co-worker. It was undoubtedly discouraging, but it likely wasn’t anything that a good night’s sleep or even a relaxing weekend couldn’t fix. You were able to bounce back into the office on Monday morning feeling ready to tackle your work. But, things aren’t that simple if you’re feeling burnt out. The mere thought of sitting at your desk will inspire an immense feeling of dread. So, if you’ve been feeling completely miserable and drained for quite some time, that’s a pretty strong indicator that you might be dealing with a true breakdown- rather than a couple of tough days. When thinking about this, you’ll also want to take some time to reflect on the last time you felt truly excited and inspired by what you do. Does a recent project or task instantly spring to mind that made you feel fulfilled and enthusiastic? Or, has trudging into the office been an exercise in frustration and exhaustion for as long as you can seem to remember? If it’s been ages since your work actually inspired some passion and excitement, that’s yet another flashing sign that you should probably take a serious step back. 2. What Inspired This Feeling? Here’s the thing about a bad day or week: You can typically pinpoint a very particular instance that led to you feeling so irritated. Maybe your boss completely tore apart a report you had poured your blood, sweat, and tears into. Perhaps you got lost on your way to an important meeting, which forced you to be late, park illegally, and then get a pricey parking ticket. Or, maybe that obnoxious co-worker stole your leftover enchiladas out of the fridge. Whatever it is- you can usually identify a specific thing that’s causing you to feel upset. But, if you’re having a tougher time zoning in on why you feel so disheartened and discouraged? Well, that might mean you’re just plain ol’ burnt out. Burnout is normally caused by larger, more ambiguous issues- think an overwhelming workload, unrealistic expectations from your superiors, long hours, or just a general dislike of what you’ve been working on. And, while these things might seem obvious in writing, when you’re in the thick of it all, they aren’t quite as easy to recognize. So, if you’re having a tough time diagnosing a precise cause for your current state, it usually means there’s a much bigger issue in play. 3. Have You Felt This Way Before? Finally, it’s helpful to look back and determine whether or not you’ve ever felt like this previously. If you can’t recall ever feeling this tired or unmotivated, you could very likely be experiencing more than just the bad day blues. After all, I’m willing to bet that you’ve already had your fair share of horrible days in the office- and, if those didn’t inspire this sort of emotional funk, there might be something more serious going on. If you have felt this way before, take some time to consider how you ended up pulling yourself out of this state previously. Were you able to move through it with a little bit of determination (and, ahem, the ice cream mentioned earlier)? Or, did you need to do something more drastic- like take a week off to relax and recharge or have a serious conversation with your boss about your responsibilities? The past can be a great indicator of your future. So, don’t forget to reflect back on your previous experiences- they can reveal a lot about whether or not you’re truly burnt out or just having a few rocky workdays. It’s not always easy to tell the difference between a true burnout and just an off week. Believe me, I get it. But, determining which you’re dealing with is essential for figuring out what to do next. So, use these three questions to gain some clarity and make forward steps from there. And, when in doubt, never hesitate to cut yourself some slack, step away from the computer, and take a little (and likely well-deserved!) break. After all, a candle that’s constantly lit at both ends will only burn out sooner- as a matter of fact, it’s inevitable.
