Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert Blair
Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert Blair Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert Blair Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert BlairArticle Edited by Julia Yeung, ASME Public Affairs and Outreach Intern Interview by Soren MaloneyNiebert Blair works as a Contract Manager for Guyana Power and Light Inc., one of the Demerara Power Plants located on the banks of the Demerara River in Georgetown, Guyana in South America. She is a Chartered Engineer with a Bachelors degree from the University of Guyana and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.Born in Georgetown, Guyana, Niebert grew up in Hopetown, Berbice, a small close-knit village with a small population of about 2,000 people, most of which are herbei relatives. As a child growing up, she found herself constantly opening and repairing items. She opened her grandmothers radio, unscrewed door locks, and even attempted repairing her own bicycle after observing her cous ins fixing theirs. These experiences fueled her passion for figuring out how things work.I dont think I chose engineering, engineering chose me. I welches the best graduating student in the region. My dad wanted me to become a lawyer and I wanted to become a doctor because I wanted to help people, but my mother wanted me to become an engineer.Nieberts mother is a teacher and witnessed her exposure to many technical subjects at school and suggested engineering as a possible career path. In addition, her fathers work as a welder at GuySuCo (Guyana Sugar Corporation) exposed her to the inner workings of a sugar factory. This encouraged her to take the GuySuCo technical training school exam. Although she was the highest scorer, she opted to go to a 2-year technical institute instead. Now as a power engineer Niebert who originally trained for mechanical engineering, acquired the skills to perform work on the electrical engineering side by working with men in the shops from the planning to implementation stage.Being involved and getting to the bottom of details, I was hands-on, even to hand a spanner. I was always at the forefront of getting the work done and my hands dirty. I would climb onto transformers to inspect for problems. Her transition into the energy development field came from her desire to pursue a new challenge. There is a shortage of power engineers in the energy sector worldwide with few engineers in the industry and almost no women. As power engineering is a key area in energy development, she was interested in and decided to apply for a job in Belize that would help her develop the skills to become a mora rounded engineer in the energy field. She worked in Belize for almost two years.Niebert also faces obstacles when it comes to working in a developing country. The lack of resources, financial constraints, and the limited amount of information available poses challenges when working to develop new systems. In a developing world, its all about dollars a nd sense, so as engineers we need to make these two combinations work well. I would be happy to know I designed a system without state of the art technology that is 80-95% efficient, that works and gives me a high return on investment. She also finds that she is not scrutinized being a woman in the industry as she has become use to working with men and has even encountered men who have tried to help and support her career advancement. She applies the principles - honesty, trust, and discipline - when it comes to working with anyone.Niebert offers this advice for young women considering a career in engineeringI would encourage everyone to do something they like doing first of all. If a young lady loves engineering, then just go for it- Let beyond the skies be your limit. Mankind has discovered a lot throughout the ages and there is a lot mora for us to discover. Engineering is a great career. You have the opportunity to develop and improve systems and most of all make living more comf ortable, affordable and rewarding. One of the projects Niebert is working on in Guyana is the Frequency Conversion of the Electrical System. It involves converting the system from 50Hz to 60Hz, which will create huge savings, reduce transmission losses, and establish a single operating frequency in the country. Her advice for engineers working in developing environments is to take the we need to make dollars and sense engineering as a science and art.Engineers must have some general knowledge of what each area involves and its contribution to the overall outcome of the bigger picture. We must think how one thing affects another. As engineers we need to understand the financial and human aspect, how what we do affects the other people we work with.

Better Bosses Is the Number One Perk People Want - The Muse
Better Bosses Is the Number One Perk People Want - The Muse Better Bosses Is the Number One Perk People Want Thereâs always something that drags our day down- a cranky co-worker, a noisy office, a boatload of demanding emails, rain, snow, getting attacked by a pigeon, I could go on forever. So, we wanted to know: Whatâs one thing that would make every day better? In fact, we asked our fellow Musers (a.k.a., you!) to pick one thing that would make their work day a heck of a lot more enjoyable- a better boss, fewer emails, a private office, or free snacks. And the results, polled from 234 users on Twitter, were fascinating: We're curious: What would make your workday a whole lot better? #career #poll- The Muse (@dailymuse) October 4, 2016 According to this, most people would choose to have a better boss over any other benefit we offered up- proving to employers that itâs not all about the perks. In addition to this being interesting (and making me question how much I love free food), it also made us realize that the struggle is real when it comes to enjoying work when your manager is just meh. So, we wanted to go ahead and help you out if you find yourself in the same boat as our Twitter poll-ees. First, figure out the disconnect. Is it a communication issue? A personality difference? An unfair system? Identifying this will make the next step easier. The next step being that you need to get honest with your boss (in a professional manner). Yes, you have the authority, as well as the responsibility to start a conversation with your supervisor and come up with a better system for yourself- and for him. Remember that this person is human, and chances are he didnât hire you just to make your life a living hell. Most managers want to help their employees be happy and succeed, because it means theyâll be happy and successful, too. So, make an effort to develop a relationship filled with open communication- try scheduling weekly or monthly meetings to update each other on whatâs working (and whatâs not), then ask for regular feedback in these meetings so you can nip any bad habits in the bud or find out if thereâs any miscommunication happening. Maybe your boss sends you confusing email responses because youâre not asking your questions clearly. Or maybe sheâs not assigning you big projects because you regularly complain about how much is currently on your plate. If regular meetings just arenât feasible, make sure to use your next performance review to voice concerns you might have- big and small. Get clear on your upcoming goals and get as much as possible in writing so itâs easy to follow up. Lastly, you can even try managing up to make both your lives easier without her even knowing. Having a not-so-great boss stinks, but itâs also very common (as shown by this poll). Rather than wishing on a lucky star that youâll be handed a perfect one, there are ways to improve your situation now. And if none of the above strategies work, we know of about 10,000+ job openings. (Just make sure to ask yourself these questions before you start interviewing to ensure youâll be a fit from the start.) And good news for the people who chose the other perks, we didnât forget about you- look here if you want to receive less emails, here to create your own private office even in an open workspace, and here to make your own delicious office snacks. Are none of these the thing that would turn your day around? Tweet us your answer! Photo of boss in meeting courtesy of Klaus Vedfelt/Getty Images.

Nominations Sought for ASME Edison Patent Award
Nominations Sought for ASME Edison Patent Award Nominations Sought for ASME Edison Patent Award Nominations Sought for the ASME Edison Patent Award The ASME Center for Research and Technology is currently seeking nominations for the ASME Thomas A. Edison Patent Award, the prestigious Society award that recognizes the work of a distinguished inventor. Established in 1997, the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award honors eminent creative achievement in the form of a patented invention, which is broadly recognized as significantly enhancing some aspect of the practice of mechanical engineering or having a significant impact on at least one industrial or commercial sector. These impacts may include creating a new business or industry; substantially improving the efficiency or productivity of an existing machine or process; dramatically reducing the size, weight or resource (e.g., energy or water) requirements in an existing machine or device; improving the quality of life; or financially impacting an existing business or industry. The nomination should focus on a single patent rather than the inventor's entire body of work. Previous recipients include Moshe Shoham for the invention of a miniature surgical robot that is affixed to the patient's bone, thereby enabling accurate treatment, and for founding Mazor Robotics to manufacture the robot; Vipin Kumar for his work with polymeric foams, which led to the creation of a new business with a wide range of applications; Jyotirmoy Mazumber for the development of the first closed loop Direct Metal Deposition technology, where functional engineering components can be made in near net shape directly from computer-aided design; and Alex J. Severinsky for the invention of the hyper-drive system, using high voltage power electronics and a turbo charged internal combustion engine, to create a commercially viable hybrid car. The award, which is presented at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, consists of a certificate, a bronze plaque, a $1,000 honorarium and a travel supplement to attend the Congress. The deadline submitting nomination materials for the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award is Feb. 10. For more information, please visit the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award page on ASME.org. Questions may be addressed to Norma Johnston, ASME Center for Research and Technology, at johnstonn@asme.org, or to the Edison Patent Award Committee chair, Richard Jacobsen, at jacorich@isu.edu.

Is Your Career Site Ready for Mobile Recruiting Heres Why It Should Be
Is Your Career Site Ready for Mobile Recruiting Hereâs Why It Should Be Is Your Career Site Ready for Mobile Recruiting Hereâs Why It Should Be Iâm sure youâve heard by now that if your website isnât mobile friendly by today, April 21, 2015, Google will remove your site from its Mobile Search Results. Anywhere from 30 percent to 45 percent of Googleâs traffic comes from a mobile device, which is why itâs so important to Google that it is delivering links to websites that are easily viewable from the mobile device. Run a test on Googleâs Developer page to see if your site is mobile friendly here. Or you can search for your site from a mobile device. If âMobile-friendlyâ pops up under your URL, you are already in good shape in Googleâs eyes. As you can see, Simply Hired is optimized for the mobile job seeker. While being verified by Google is important, whatâs more important is being optimized for a good mobile job seeker experience. Here at Simply Hired over 40 percent of our job seeker traffic originates from a mobile device, and that percentage is increasing. Yet, less than 20 percent of Fortune 500 companies allow for a mobile job seeker to apply for a job online, according to the iMomentous Corporate Mobile Readiness Report. Jibe reports that 80 percent of job seekers expect to be able to search for jobs easily from a smart phone. They also found that 20 percent of job seekers would not apply to a job if they could not do so from their phone. What does this all mean for you? As a sales guy, the most common pain point I hear from customers and prospects is that they would like to reduce their cost per hire across all sources. Well, guess what? Addressing the mobile job seeker is a great way to reduce your costs. Letâs do some quick math. Letâs say your average job gets 1,000 clicks across all sources. If all sources have a similar desktop to mobile traffic ratio then 600 of those clicks come from desktop and 400 of those clicks come from a mobile device. If you donât have a process that allows a mobile job seeker to apply to that job, you just wasted 400 clicks. In other words, 400 job seekers found the open position you are trying to fill and could not apply to the job if they wanted to. Maybe the job seeker goes back to the job from an alternative device, but more often then not, the job seeker moves on. For those companies that sponsor with Simply Hired, we like to ensure that when a job seeker clicks on an open position they can actually apply to it. If you donât have a good mobile application process in place, your jobs are only being sponsored on desktop. If youâre interested in hearing more about how Simply Hired can help with your mobile recruitment strategy. Contact us today!
