This examination is organized by PMI in two ways:PMP Computer-Based Tests (CBTs)PMP Paper-Based Tests (PBTs)I will talk about them later in this article. For now, let us find outwho can apply for the PMP certification.Pre-Requisites of PMP ExamBeing one of the most prominent certifications, PMI sets certain educational an d professional experience requirements. You need to fulfill these requirements to be able to apply for this certification. PMI expects the PMP certification aspirants come with a high school degree along with an Associates degree or a global equivalent degree. Along with this, the candidate must have 60+ months or 7,500+ hours of project management experience.Below are the prerequisites in a nutshell:Educational BackgroundPM ExperiencePM EducationHigh School Diploma60+ Months7500+ Hrs35 Contact HoursAssociates DegreeGlobal Equivalent DegreeBachelors Degree36+ Months4500+ Hrs35 Contact HoursGlobal Equivalent DegreeOne thing I would like to bring into your attention is that you can only attempt the PMP exam thrice in one year. The experience must have been acquired within the last eight consecutive years prior to your application submission. But the mentioned project durations must not overlap with each other. Moreover, you need to have an experience in all the five process groups acro ss all your projects. You dont need to be a project manager for acquiring all this experience, you can be a professional who has experience in leading and directing projects. Thus, you can belong to any domain like marketing, programming, event management, construction etc. to be able to take up thePMP exam and bag it.I hope this answers some of your queries like:What is the eligibility criteria for PMP certification? Can you take the PMP Exam without any degree or experience? How many years of experience is required for PMP?In the next section of this article, I will be discussing the details regarding the examination fee of the PMP certification exam.Examination FeeWhen talking about the PMP Certification exam, people generally have a doubt regarding, how much does a PMP Exam cost?Well, to avoid any kind of confusion let me make it clear that there are two ways in which PMI charges for the registration of PMP certification exam. One of these registration includes the PMI membership charges while the other one doesnt. If you are a new member and want to take up the PMI membership, it will cost you around129 USDalong with 10 USD as a one-time application fee. This membership is valid for a span of just one year, after the completion of which you need to renew it by paying 129 USD on a yearly basis. As I have mentioned earlier in this article, you can take the PMP certification exam in two modes:PMP Computer-Based Tests (CBTs): In CBTs, all you need to do is book your slot for the exam with aPrometric test center located near you. CBTs are conducted every day all over the world and which makes it easy to get a slot according to your preference.PMP Paper-Based Tests (PBTs):In PBTs, you have to take the exam on the pre-scheduled dates that are declared on their Prometric website. The PMP exam fee can vary based on the mode of exam. The current fee for a non-PMI member going for CBT is 555 USD whereas for a PMI member it is just 405 USD. Similarly, exam fee for a non-P MI member opting PBT is 400 USD whereas for a PMI member it is just 250 USD. But, you can apply for a PBT only if you stay within a radius of 300 km from your nearestPrometric center or if the PMP examination is sponsored byyour Employer for the employees within the organization. What if you schedule your exam but for some reason, you fail to appear for it. To avoid any kind of inconvenience or loss for the candidates, PMI provides a refund policy as well. But to claim it you have to request PMI at least 30 days prior to the expiry date of your exam which is exactly 1 year from the date when PMI finishes your PMP exam application review. If you successfully apply within the valid period, PMI will charge you 100 USD as the processing fee and the rest will be returned back to you.If you fail to meet the PMIs audit requirements for the certification, you will be charged100 USD out of your refund amount.Unfortunately, if you are not able to clear your exam in the first attempt, then be d isheartened as PMI provides an option to retake the examination. You are eligible for 3 retakes in a year. For each retake, PMI charges 275 USD for PMI members and 375 USD for non-members for computer-based testing. Similarly, for Paper Based Test, PMI charges 150USD for PMI members and 300 USD for non-members. However, I would suggest you, not to consider re-examination as an option and aim to clear the PMP certification exam in the first go only.Below is the PMP Certification exam fee in a nutshell:Exam CategoryFee for PMI MembersFee for non-PMI MembersComputer Based Test405 USD555 USDPaper Based Test250 USD400 USDRe-examination Computer-Based275 USD375 USDRe-examination Paper-Based150USD300 USDI guess I have answered your queries like:Can I reschedule the PMP exam? What if you fail the PMP exam? How many times can you retake the PMP exam in a year? How much does it cost to retake the PMP exam? Now, that you know the eligibility and the fees required for the PMP Certificationexam, let me now take up the next topic where I will be discussing the various privileges that a PMI member enjoys.PMI Membership PrivilegesPMI members hold some special privileges. In the previous section, we learnedabout the concessions the members get in the examination fees. Well, the list doesnt end here. Before we talk about these privileges, lets understand different types of memberships that PMI offers. There are three types of memberships provided by PMI:Individual Membership This type of membership is open to anyone who is interested in project management. Individual membership will be the best choice for you if your work involves projects or project management, or you just want to learn about project management thoroughly. Student Membership PMI membership is not just constrained to project practitioners. Even if you are a student with lots of passion and interest in project management you can apply for the PMI Student Membership. The only factor to be considered is you must be en rolled in a degree-granting program at a college or university that has U.S. accreditation, or any global equivalent. Retiree Membership Retiring from work doesnt mean to give up on your interests and likings. You can apply for the PMIs Retiree membership if you have been a PMI member in good standing for five consecutive years and have retired from active employment. That way you can easily stay in touch with the profession of your choice. Now that you know about the types of PMI memberships, let me now generalize the privileges, each of these offers:Direct access to PMIs job boardsDiscounted access to project management resourcesFree access to PMIs standards, tools, and templatesAccess to a wide range of peer-written articlesOn-demand webinars and volunteer opportunities to gain PDUsAccess to regular PMI publications like PM Network, PMI Today, and the Project Management Journal. All the above-listed benefits are really of a great help if you are a project management practitioner a nd want to maintain the PMP certification. Now, its up to you whether you want to take up the membership and enjoy all these benefits or suffer in vain. So, this pretty much concludes everything you need to know regarding the PMI memberships. In the next section of this article, I will be giving you a complete timeline that you can follow to clear your certification exam in the first attempt.Ideal Preparation TimeFrankly, for a distinguished exam like PMP certification, the amount of preparation put in barely reaches the satisfaction level. You have to solve all these questions within 4 hours. And since there is no negative marking, I would suggest you attempt each and every question, even if you are not sure about the correct answer. As this form is really long and time-consuming, it will be a total waste if your application gets rejected. Once you have made sure of these requirements, you can go ahead and fill the form. Well, earlier PMI provided two modes for application fill up which areonline and printable PDF mode. But now, PMI has retired the paper-based application and encourages everyone to fill credential exams online.Above image depicts thefour steps involved in the PMP Certification application process. Let me now discuss them in detail:Filling the Application Form:PMP exam application form needs a lot of information. It is divided into three sections: PART I:General Information PART II:Project Management Experience PART III:Details of 35 Contact Hours Training Program Now, filling this much of information definitely consumes a lot of time. I would suggest you to keep the required documents ready before you start filling up the form. But its a relief, that an unfinished application form can be saved and finished later. You can completethis form within 90 days, during which PMI will keep sending you the reminders to finish it. One thing you must remember is that, once you start filling it up, it cant be canceled. Before submitting the application, double check the details you have providedelse it will become a hassle to change it later. NOTE: Once you submit your application, PMIwill take 5-7 days toreview your application. In case something is not complete, PMIwill notify you by email. Make sure you keep a track of the email.Fee payment:Once your application is received and accepted, PMIwill send you a confir mation email regarding the payment. In case you dont meet the requirements of the audit, PMI will refund your amount.PMP audit process:Now, if your application is accepted and you have made the payment, the audit process will begin. Among all the applications submitted to PMI,only a small percentageis selected. Application selection is done on a random basis. If you are selected for the audit, PMIwill notify you. Once you receive the confirmation mail, within 90 days, you need to submit the required documents. After document submission, within 6-7 working days, the audit process will commence. Moreover, your exam eligibility period will start from the day your audit gets cleared.Scheduling the exam:PMIwill send you an email with a unique code once your audit is cleared. You need to use this code to schedule your exam through thePrometricsite. You can take your exam anytime within the span of one year and in case you want to reschedule your exam, you just need to inform PMI two days p rior to the exam. This concludes the PMP application procedure. Hope, through this section, I was able to clear some basic doubts like:How do I apply for PMP certification? How long does the PMP application take to process? So, how do you renew the PMP Certification? Lets get into the details in the next section.PMP Certification RenewalNow, if you are successful in bagging the PMP Certification dont think you are done and dusted. According to this program, being a PMP credential holde r, you are expected to earn 60Professional Development Units (PDU) in a cycle of 3 years. Well, one PDU is equivalent toone hour spent in any Professional Development activity. Once you have enough PDUs you can easily apply for the certification renewal. There will be security checks at the exam center, plan your schedule in such a way that you reach the exam center at least an hour before the exam starts.Prepare everything you need a night before Dont be lazy and leave the important things to prepare in the morning of the exam day. Get everything ready and inside your bag a night before your D-Day likeID, papers, study notes, pen, cash etc.Watch out your diet Try to have moderate food a day before your exam, as we definitely dont want an upset stomach or a headache to deal with. On the day of the exam, dont go on an empty stomach and keep yourself hydrated.Brain Dumps Well, PMP exam centers havebanned the Exam Brain Dump tactic in order to ensure fairness. But once the exam starts, you can take 5-6 minutes to write all the information you remember on to the paper given to you by Prometric staff. This can be helpful during the exam and act as a quick reference. Now, these were very basic things that you must pay attention if you wish to come out with flying colors. There is no restriction in the type of industry or the background knowledge to be able to apply for PMP certification.Myth 2: You need at least 61% to pass PMP Exam.Well, this might have been par tially true till 2005 but not anymore. Nowadays, PMI judges you based on a sound psychometric analysis as I have already mentioned earlier in this article.Myth 3: 35 PDUs are mandatory to take PMPExam. The actual fact is, you need 35 contact hours not the PDUs to be able to apply for this exam. You can get trained from any trainer irrespective of they are registered or not. The only benefit of getting trained by a REP is that their course content is pre-appr oved by PMI.Myth 6: You must be proficient in ITTOs.There are approx 500 ITTOs listed in the PMBOK guide and there is no point in memorizing them. It is better to utilize your time in understanding the concepts behind each of the processes.Myth 7: It will increase your salary.PMP certification can help with salary hike, but it will ultimately depend on your potential.
